SOME IDEAS FOR SHARING YOUR INTERNATIONAL PROGRAM DELEGATION EXPERIENCE Revised 3/02

1. TALK to everyone you can think of about what you learned and saw.

Have two or three immediate anecdotes and facts ready when someone asks: "How was your trip?"

Carry three to five of your best photos with you to show with your stories. (You can vary the selection each week).

Ask people what they know about NAFTA. Watch for signs that they've heard enough. You can always say more later.

2. SCHEDULE formal SPEAKING ENGAGEMENTS to describe your trip.

Think about asking your school classes, churches, synagogues, community groups for an opportunity to speak. (Rotary and other community clubs are always looking for speakers).

Call us for a sheet of Public Speaking tips..

Use slides, video, power point, or photos to enhance your talk. Labor-Religion has two excellent videos which
describe a delegation experience. Call Maureen for a free copy.

Ask people to take a specific action: call a Congressperson, sign a petition, write a letter, contribute to...

Invite people to contact the NYS Labor-Religion Coalition to join the State and local Coalition. 1-800-342-9810 x6294

3. WRITE about your experience.

Find out how to submit an "op-ed" piece to your local paper. You have seen things most others in your community have not; this gives you a special credibility.

Write letters to the editor.

Submit articles, letters, pictures to your school paper, your church paper, your union publication, your local newsletter.

Write letters to your friends and family about "My Unusual Trip to Mexico."

4. INVITE friends for an evening at your home.

Serve Mexican food.

Show pictures and tell stories about your delegation.

Take time before dessert to write letters to Congress.

Ask for financial support for a student scholarship, for Pedro, for the health care fund, for delegation scholarships
so that others can experience what you did.

5. ORGANIZE a book party for BORDER WITNESS.

Invite Maureen and Marie to come for a book-signing (and sign books yourself—you were there!).

Exhibit the enlarged photos from Border Witness at your church, school, community center.

Use the opportunity to speak about your experience.

6. RECRUIT members for future delegations.

7. ASK for FINANCIAL SUPPORT.

People will want to know how to help when they hear your stories. Have some specific ideas, including communicating with elected officials.

Contributions of money can be earmarked for:
scholarships for Mexican students, organizer support, delegation scholarships, the emergency health fund and general operating expenses for the International Program of the Labor-Religion Coalition. All donations are tax-exempt.

8. HAVE FUN and please SEND your outreach news to Maureen. You can print and use the Post Delegation Outreach Report available by clicking the underlined words.
