News
Candidates will be kept acountable for their support of universal health care following a successful Citizen's Hearing on Health Care on September 16, 2006, according to Athena Godot-Calogeras, one of the event's organizers. Candidates for congressional and state offices heard testimony from more than ten individuals and answered questions from the audience. The hearing was organized by the Health Care Access Coalition, a project of the Labor-Religion Coalition of Southwestern New York. The group was called together by the Labor-Religion Coalition of Southwestern New York in the fall of 2005 to plan and execute projects. Contact Athena Godot-Calogeras at 716/ 372-4462 for more information.

As part of group of community members, businesses and unions called Community First, members of the Labor-Religion Coalition are working to assure that the Allegany, NY Planning Board and Town Board consider carefully before approving a proposed Wal-mart Supercenter.

The group's first public witness was at a Kickoff Ceremony for the 2003 40-hour Fast at the Warming House, a student-run soup kitchen on West State Street in Olean. Fasters came willing to say a few words to the camera for a short video for distribution to labor and religious groups. On Friday, March 14 participants broke the fast together outside the Warming House.
